侘びた茶人を心酔させた桃山陶を代表する「志野」。利休が侘び茶を大成し、町人に茶の湯が広まるにつれて、創意に富んだ美濃の茶碗が好まれるようになりました。16世紀末に生まれた志野は、日本で初めて白い釉の下に筆で絵や文様を描いたやきものです。装飾性が豊かで、半透明な釉に浮かぶ斬新な鉄絵の面白さは、茶人を虜にし隆盛を極めました。
志野は、17世紀初めまで焼かれます。可児市久々利大萱の牟田洞古窯では、国宝志野茶碗銘「卯花墻」が焼かれたといわれています。
陶工たちは、当時の美意識の高い茶人たちの要求を満たす技術力と探究心で、志野や鼠志野などを制作したのでしょう。
志野は、茶碗や香合、水指、花生などの茶道具や、向付、皿、鉢などの食器類など種類が多くみられます。
国宝や重要文化財に指定されている名品も多く、まさに美濃桃山陶を代表するやきものといえます。

Shino ware is representative of Momoyama-period pottery and continues to fascinate tea masters who revel in its sober refinement. SEN no Rikyū achieved fame through his development of the wabicha style of tea ceremony that values simplicity and frugality. As the tea ceremony spread among the townsmen, the rich creativity of Mino Province’s tea bowls found an eager following. Shino ware, which was first produced from the end of the 16th century, was the first pottery in Japan to have motifs applied with a brush below a white glaze. The novel appearance of these striking designs, which utilize iron glaze under a semi-transparent white glaze, captivated the imaginations of the tea masters, making them extremely popular.
Shino ware was produced into the early 17th century. It is said that the tea bowl named ‘Unohanagaki’ that has been designated a national treasure was fired at the Mutabora kiln in Kukuri Ōgaya, in present day Kani City.
Tea ceremony aficionados possessed highly refined aesthetics and in order to meet their demands the potters of the day employed their skills and inquisitive minds to develop Shino and Nezumi Shino ware.
A wide variety of Shino ware was produced, ranging from tea ceremony utensils, such as tea bowls, incense burners, lidded water containers, vases, etc., to tableware, such as side dishes, plates, bowls, etc.
Many of the outstanding works that remain today have been designated national treasures or important cultural properties and it is true to say that Shino was representative of Momoyama-period Mino ware.
